چکیده

Both satissability problems and probabilistic models are popular in artiicial intelligence and computer science. This paper looks at the rich intersection between these two topics, opening the door for the use of satissability approaches in probabilistic domains. The paper examines a generic probabilistic satissability problem, which can function for probabilistic domains as Sat does for deterministic domains. Extending the analogy with Sat, the paper deenes a Davis-Putnam-Logemann-Loveland-style procedure for solving probabilistic satissability problems, and reports on a preliminary empirical exploration of the complexity of the algorithm for a collection of randomly generated probabilistic problems. The results exhibit the familiar easy-hardest-hard pattern for the diiculty of random Sat formu-lae. Special cases of the probabilistic satissabil-ity problem lie in diierent complexity classes, and one counterintuitive result is that the computational complexity and the empirical complexity of the problems examined do not track each other exactly|problems in the hardest complexity class are not the hardest to solve.

Exploiting a Theory of Phase Transitions in Three-Satisfiability Problems

In the past few years there have been several empirical discoveries of phase transitions in constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs), and a growth of interest in the area among the arti cial intelligence community. This paper extends a simple analytical theory of phase transitions in three-satis ability (3-SAT) problems in two directions. First, a more accurate, problem-dependent calculation lea...

Contingent Planning Under Uncertainty via Stochastic Satis ability

We describe two new probabilistic planning techniques|c-maxplan and zander|that generate contingent plans in probabilistic propositional domains. Both operate by transforming the planning problem into a stochastic satis ability problem and solving that problem instead. c-maxplan encodes the problem as an E-Majsat instance, while zander encodes the problem as an S-Sat instance. Although S-Sat pr...

Probing the Probabilistic Effects of Imperfections on the Load Carrying Capacity of Flat Double-Layer Space Structures

Load carrying capacity of flat double-layer space structures majorly depends on the structures' imperfections. Imperfections in initial curvature, length, and residual stress of members are all innately random and can affect the load-bearing capacity of the members and consequently that of the structure. The double-layer space trusses are susceptible to progressive collapse due to sudden buckli...

Models Supporting Nondeterminism and Probabilistic Choice

In this paper we describe the problems encountered in building a semantic model that supports both nondeterministic choice and probabilistic choice. Several models exist that support both of these constructs, but none that we know of satis es all the laws one would like. Using domain-theoretic techniques, we show how a model can be devised \on top of" certain models for probabilistic choice, so...
